For Central Coast High School senior Hunter Janis, graduation next June represents more than a milestone. It marks a historic and deeply personal achievement shaped by perseverance, support, and a clear sense of purpose.
Hunter has been accepted to both Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State University after applying to three CSU campuses. He plans to attend San Francisco State University, where he was admitted to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work.
According to Central Coast High School College and Career Planning Specialist Kimberly Moir, Hunter’s success stands out within the school’s recent history. Five years ago, one CCHS student was accepted to Fresno State but was unable to attend. Prior to that, longtime registrar Ginger Russo, who has served the school for the past 15 years, said she had not known of any Central Coast student enrolling directly in a four-year university.
Hunter credits Central Coast High School teachers and staff for helping him rebuild his academic path and envision a stronger future. With support from educators and administrators, he was able to improve his grades, correct his transcript, and navigate the college application process.
“My teachers believed in me and pushed me to go full force,” Hunter said. “They helped me get my grades back on track. They really helped fix my future.”
Inspired by his own experiences navigating both the education and foster care systems, Hunter chose social work as a way to give back. He hopes to support young people who have faced challenges similar to his own.
“I grew up in systems that failed me,” Hunter explained. “I’ve seen firsthand what happens to youth like me, and I want to help pave a new way for them.”
Now, with a college plan in place and a clear career path ahead, Hunter says he feels hopeful, not just for himself, but for others who may still be searching for direction.
“There is a light at the end of that tunnel,” he said. “I’ve seen that light firsthand.”
Hunter’s journey reflects the growing impact of college and career supports at Central Coast High School and the belief that every student deserves opportunity, encouragement, and the chance to succeed.
